White light. Heat. A drawn-out moment of complete silence. And then the screaming starts.

An Underground carriage in London is destroyed by a suicide bomber. The injured and the dead litter the platform. But as a crowd forms at street level, Michael Pope knows that this is only the beginning.

Pope, head of top-secret Group Fifteen, is tasked with finding the perpetrators of this atrocity and bringing them to justice, any way he can. He knows that the answers to many of his questions will lie at the end of the money trail, but he also knows that whoever funded and organised the attack will kill again for their freedom.

This is an operation that requires a very special kind of agent. Pope needs someone who exists outside of normality. Someone who floats above it, treading softly through a fractured life.

He needs the Angel.

The Angel is the first part in a continuing story involving Isabella Rose. The story will be continued in Act II, The Asset.

First - I am a huge Mark Dawson fan. LOVE the Milton series, really enjoyed Beatrix Rose, and even liked the crime series books. I was really looking forward to this book - and will admit that I enjoyed parts of it, it does not hit the same level as many of his previous works. It is fair to expect another Sword of God for a first book in a spin off series - probably not. Is it fair to expect that an author of Dawson's abilities to create a storyline that is exciting and plausible... I believe so. (If not, it is a testament to the faith he has inspired in his readers thus far, that a number of folks appear to feel a bit let down.

I enjoyed learning more about some of the characters in Dawson's "pantheon" and found many of the new details or new characters interesting, the actual storyline itself inspires moments of pure incredulity. The terrorist attack - well written; the response to the attack - a few truly cool moments that stuck with me; the use of a fifteen-year old as an agent - felt contrived.

So - while the story itself has a number of strong points and good character development, this doesn't seem like his strongest work.

While disappointed in the ending (or lack thereof) like many other readers, I am not angry or unwilling to read any of Dawson's future work. I do wish that this felt more like a complete book or novel, but am interested in learning why he chose this approach. (One of the things I like most about Dawson as an author is his willingness to engage with his readers on Facebook..)

So - while I can't give this the usual 4 or 5 that most of his books rate, I remain enthusiastic to see how this adventure ends - and where she will go as "The Angel" evolves.

The Angel Act I An Isabella Rose Thriller Book 1 edition by Mark Dawson Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

I won the 4th book in this series through Goodreads and decided I better start from the beginning. While interesting this book started out a little slow. I have read the first Beatrix Rose book so I knew a little background about Isabella but after reading this book I think reading the Beatrix Rose books would be advantageous even if not really necessary to read this series. It wasn't until about 70% that Isabella really has a part in this story and the pace really picks up. I really like how this book shows the viewpoint of Aamir and really humanizes him. Good thing I have book 2 already, after an ending like that I need to jump right into the next one immediately.
Mark Dawson has done it again. The Isabella Rose series first novel did not disappoint. Kind of picking up the characters in John Milton Series. Full of suspense and lots of action. Characters very well developed. The first part of the book is setting up not only the book but this whole series. The character development revolves around the rapidly movement of the story. I could hardly put it down.

Mark Dawson is one of my favorite authors. A style all his own but equal to many of the big name mystery writers. Don't miss this series. I am still reading the series.....one after the other as I can't seem to stop. I'm not sure I've ever done this before. Don't wait any longer, get this book and start reading this series.
I am very much a fan of Mark Dawson and have read everything, so far, except for the Soho Noir stuff.

I've read Isabella's 'The Asset' and the third book in her series, 'The Agent' and - again - I'm liking them very much.

But there is one thing that's really starting to bother me... the way none of these three books has an actual *end* and just leaves you hanging. Grrrrr.

I won't ding the rating down for it, but it still makes me angry.
Fairly good book or should I say fairly good first half of a book! Extremely annoyed that the story practically ended mid-sentence. Not sure if I'll bother with the next one.
While I love the characters, the plot moves along in a clunky fashion. And I don't like the lack of resolution for the the ending. It is just a come on to read the next one. I would read the next in the series and look forward to it even more eagerly if there was an end to Book 1. Instead it appears that Book and Book 2 is just the first book chopped in half. In the Beatrix Rose series, each Book had its own closure. I consider how Book 1 ended to be a cheap trick. I expect more from Dawson. If he wants 5 star reviews for each book, each one needs to be complete on its own.
In the film business, a lazy actor is sometimes described as "phoning the performance in". This is the impression I got from this book, first in the series, apparently.

If a novel is explicitly one part to be continued in a number of parts, the jacket needs to indicate this; had it done so, I would not have bought it. I will not be buying the second in the series. And I have bought many series before, so this decision is not about series per se, just the execution of this one.

More in many places, the book is more a list of the specs of weapons and tradecraft than a novel we know little of the character and motivations of the two main protagonists, Pope and Isabella, by book one's ending.

The basic idea is interesting; in my view, as having written a few books myself (admittedly non-fiction) I am disappointed by this effort.
First let me say that I'm a huge Mark Dawson fan. I'm constantly amazed how he moves his characters around the world, placing them in richly described, far away locales, all from his computer in the UK. His characters are well developed and intriguing for the most part, and the plots are timely and not at all cliches. I was extremely excited when I heard that Isabella was to have her own series and thoroughly enjoyed this book, except for one small issue.....maybe I'm being picky, but I kind of like a resolution of some sort at the end of my novels. Not a sudden ending, with an unsaid "to be continued". I wonder whether Mark felt pressure to get her out to his public or what, but personally I'd just as soon have waited for him to finish the second half of the story. Otherwise.......
